Data extraction, data mining, screen scraping, all these terms are used interchangeably when discussing gathering and/or analyzing information found online, but they are not all the same thing. Screen-scraping allows you to get information, data mining allows you to analyze information, and data extraction a process that involves both.
Screen scraping most commonly refers to extracting information from web sites. People often do this to build things like comparison shopping engines, archive web pages, or simply download text to a spreadsheet so that it can be filtered and analyzed. Data mining is an automated way to search data for patterns. You may or may not have the data already, but it has nothing to do with how you got the data in the first place. Data extraction involves gathering data from online sources, organizing, and analyzing it.
